Description
In 1911, the 'Mona Lisa' was stolen from the Louvre, and for a short time, Pablo Picasso was a lead suspect. The police investigation led to Picasso and his friend, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, because they had previously been in possession of stolen Iberian statues taken from the museum by a mutual acquaintance. Picasso was even brought before a judge for questioning. While he had nothing to do with the disappearance of the 'Mona Lisa' (which had been taken by an Italian handyman named Vincenzo Peruggia), the scandal terrified the young artist. Picasso later admitted he was so scared that he wept during the interrogation. This event occurred just as he was pioneering Cubism, a movement that would fundamentally break the rules of perspective that the Renaissance masters, like Leonardo da Vinci, had established.
