Description
Banksy is the world's most famous anonymous street artist. Emerging from the Bristol underground scene in the 1990s, Banksy uses stenciling as a primary technique to quickly execute political and social commentary on public walls. This method allows him to finish a piece and disappear before the authorities arrive. His work is often satirical, tackling themes like consumerism, war, and authority. In 2018, Banksy pulled one of the most famous stunts in art history: as soon as his painting 'Girl with Balloon' was sold at auction for over $1 million, a shredder hidden in the frame partially destroyed the work. Rather than losing value, the shredded piece (retitled 'Love is in the Bin') sold again in 2021 for $25.4 million. Banksy's ability to manipulate the art market while critiquing it has made him a unique figure in contemporary art.
