Description
Earl Grey tea is one of the most famous flavored teas in the world, characterized by its distinct citrus aroma. It is named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister in the 1830s. The tea is a blend of black tea scented with oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit primarily grown in Italy. According to one legend, the blend was a gift from a Chinese mandarin whose son was saved from drowning by one of Lord Grey's men. However, it is more likely that the bergamot was added to offset the taste of lime in the water at Howick Hall, the Earl's family seat in Northumberland. Today, the tea is enjoyed worldwide, often served black or with a slice of lemon to highlight the citrus notes.
