Description
The bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. Its origins date back to the Kamakura period, when 'hoshi-ii' (dried meal) was carried by workers. The bento evolved into an art form during the Edo period. A traditional bento is balanced according to the 'rule of five': it should include five colors (red, yellow, green, black, white) and five tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami). This ensures both nutritional balance and aesthetic appeal. Modern 'Kyaraben' (character bento) takes this further, with food arranged to look like popular characters from anime or movies. Beyond convenience, the bento represents the care and affection of the person who prepared it, making it a vital part of Japanese social and family life.
