Description
The discovery of coffee is often credited to an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi. According to legend, Kaldi noticed that his goats became extremely energetic and refused to sleep after eating the bright red berries from a certain bush. He took the berries to a local monk, who disapproved of their stimulating effects and threw them into a fire. The aroma of the roasting 'beans' (which are actually seeds) was so enticing that the monks gathered them, ground them, and dissolved them in hot water, creating the first cup of coffee. By the 15th century, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia. Today, coffee is the most popular everyday beverage in the world, with over 2 billion cups consumed daily.
