Description
Yerba Mate is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink made from the dried leaves of the *Ilex paraguariensis* holly tree. It was first used and cultivated by the Guaraní people long before European arrival. The drink is famous for its unique social ritual: it is traditionally prepared in a dried gourd (also called a 'mate') and sipped through a metal straw with a filtered end called a 'bombilla.' In Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, the mate is shared among friends, with one person (the 'cebador') responsible for refilling the gourd with hot water and passing it to the next person. Yerba mate is known for providing the 'strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate,' containing a unique combination of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline.
