Description
The Graham cracker was originally designed as a health food to suppress 'carnal urges.' Its inventor, Sylvester Graham, was a Presbyterian minister who believed that a diet of bland, high-fiber foods would prevent sinful behavior and physical ailments. The original cracker was made with 'Graham flour,' a coarse, unsifted whole wheat flour that was free from the chemical additives (like alum and chlorine) common in 19th-century white bread. Ironically, the modern Graham cracker is highly sweetened with sugar, honey, and cinnamon, making it far from the austere health snack Graham intended. It eventually became an 'everyday' pantry staple and the essential base for S'mores, a campfire treat popularized by the Girl Scouts in the 1920s.
