Botanically, the strawberry is an 'accessory fruit,' not a true berry. A true berry must be produced from a single ovary and have its seeds on the inside (like a banana or a tomato). In a strawberry, the red fleshy part is actually an enlarged receptacle—the part of the stem that holds the flower. The tiny 'seeds' on the outside are called achenes, and each one is technically a tiny individual fruit containing a single seed. Strawberries are the only everyday fruit that wears its seeds on the outside.
