Confucius, or Kong Fuzi, was a Chinese philosopher and politician whose teachings emphasize personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity. His followers competed successfully with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. After the victory of Han over Chu, Confucius's thoughts received official sanction and were further developed into a system known in the West as Confucianism. His philosophy emphasized 'Ren' (benevolence or humaneness) and 'Li' (ritual or etiquette). He believed that harmony in the family leads to harmony in the state, forming the bedrock of East Asian social values for over two millennia.
