Description
Emmeline Pankhurst was the leader of the British suffragette movement who founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). Unlike earlier suffrage groups, the WSPU adopted the motto 'Deeds, not words,' employing militant tactics such as window-smashing, arson, and hunger strikes to force the government to address women's voting rights. Pankhurst was imprisoned numerous times, where she and others were subjected to force-feeding. Her radical approach was controversial even within the movement but succeeded in keeping the issue at the forefront of British politics. During World War I, she shifted her focus to supporting the war effort, arguing that women's contributions to the home front proved their right to citizenship. Her legacy is one of uncompromising courage and the use of direct action to achieve political change.
