Description
Andorra la Vella is the capital of the Principality of Andorra and holds the title of the highest capital city in Europe, situated at an elevation of 1,023 meters (3,356 feet) in the Pyrenees mountains. The country is a 'co-principality' with a unique political arrangement: its two heads of state are the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell in Spain. This system has existed since 1278. Andorra is the only country in the world where Catalan is the sole official language. The capital is a major destination for duty-free shopping and winter sports, but it also preserves its medieval heritage in the 'Barri Antic' (Old Quarter), where the 16th-century Casa de la Vall serves as the historic parliament building. Despite being a modern nation, Andorra has no national airport or train stations, making the capital accessible only by road from France or Spain.
