Description
Guatemala City is the most populous and largest urban area in Central America. Located in the 'Valle de la Ermita' (Valley of the Hermitage), the city was established as the capital in 1776 after a series of devastating earthquakes destroyed the previous capital, Antigua Guatemala. The city is a place of dramatic contrasts, where ultra-modern skyscrapers and luxury malls sit just miles away from the ruins of Kaminaljuyu, a major ancient Mayan city that is now partially buried under modern suburbs. Because it is surrounded by active volcanoes—such as Pacaya, Fuego, and Agua—the city has a long history of volcanic and seismic activity. This geographic reality has led to the development of a unique 'Zone' system, where the city is divided into 22 administrative zones designed for easier navigation and urban management. Despite the challenges of being in a high-risk volcanic zone, it remains the primary economic hub for the region, known for its vibrant street food culture and as a center for the production of high-quality highland coffee.
