Description
Harvey Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in a major U.S. city, winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk campaigned on a platform of neighborhood representation and civil rights, becoming a powerful voice for the LGBTQ+ community. He was instrumental in defeating Proposition 6 (the Briggs Initiative), which would have banned gay people from teaching in California public schools. Milk famously said, 'If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.' Tragically, he was assassinated in City Hall just eleven months after taking office. His life and martyrdom sparked a new era of LGBTQ+ political activism and paved the way for future leaders. In 2009, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
