Description
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary who served as the country's first Black president. After spending 27 years in prison for his opposition to the white-minority government's system of racial segregation, Mandela was released in 1990. Instead of seeking revenge against his captors, he advocated for reconciliation and a 'Rainbow Nation.' He worked alongside President F.W. de Klerk to dismantle apartheid and organize the first multi-racial elections in 1994, which he won. Mandela's leadership during the transition period prevented a civil war and established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. His legacy is defined by his extraordinary lack of bitterness and his belief that 'education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.' He remains a global icon of peace and forgiveness.
