Description
Teatro Amazonas is an opera house located in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Built during the 'Rubber Boom' in the late 19th century, it was intended to show the world that the Amazon was a center of wealth and culture. Almost every material used in the building was imported from Europe: roofing tiles from Alsace, stairs and columns from Italian marble, and furniture from France. The most striking feature is its dome, covered with 36,000 decorated ceramic tiles painted in the colors of the Brazilian flag. Despite its location in a tropical jungle, the theater hosted the greatest performers of the era. After the rubber market collapsed, the theater fell into disrepair for decades before being restored. It remains a surreal symbol of the 'Paris of the Jungle' era.
