Description
While many people think of Ottawa or Moscow as the coldest capitals, the title actually belongs to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Located at an elevation of 1,350 meters above sea level and far from the moderating influence of any ocean, Ulaanbaatar experiences an extreme continental climate. The annual average temperature is actually below freezing, hovering around -1.3°C (29.7°F). During the winter months of January and February, temperatures frequently plummet to -40°C. The city's location in a valley surrounded by mountains creates a temperature inversion, where cold air is trapped on the valley floor, leading to intense frost and, unfortunately, heavy smog during the winter as residents burn coal for warmth. Ulaanbaatar is a city of rapid transition, where traditional gers (nomadic felt tents) sit in the shadows of modern glass skyscrapers. It serves as the primary hub for nearly half of Mongolia's population, acting as the gateway to the vast Gobi Desert and the endless steppes that define the nation's landscape.
