Description
Codenamed Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, remain the largest seaborne invasion in history. Under the supreme command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Allied forces from the U.S., Britain, Canada, and other nations stormed five heavily fortified beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The operation required unprecedented levels of planning, deception (Operation Bodyguard), and logistics. Despite heavy casualties, particularly at Omaha Beach, the Allies successfully established a beachhead in Nazi-occupied Western Europe. This breakthrough allowed for the liberation of Paris in August 1944 and the subsequent advance into Germany. D-Day is often cited as the beginning of the end for the Third Reich in Europe, as it forced Germany to fight a two-front war against the Western Allies and the Soviet Union advancing from the East.
