Description
Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, holds the somber distinction of being the last divided capital city in the world. Since the 1974 conflict, the city has been split by the 'Green Line,' a United Nations-monitored buffer zone that separates the Republic of Cyprus in the south from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The line consists of barbed wire, high walls, and abandoned buildings, effectively cutting through the heart of the city's medieval Venetian walls. Despite this division, Nicosia remains a vibrant administrative and financial hub. The Ledra Street crossing, once a symbol of the blockade, was opened in 2008 to allow pedestrians to move between the two sectors. The city’s history is a palimpsest of civilizations, featuring Gothic cathedrals converted into mosques, British colonial architecture, and ancient circular fortifications that remain some of the best-preserved in the world. It serves as a living monument to the complexities of 20th-century geopolitics and the ongoing efforts for reunification.
