Description
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of the Northern Territory’s arid 'Red Centre.' It is an 'inselberg,' or island mountain, that stands 348 meters high, though the bulk of its mass lies underground. It is sacred to the Aṉangu, the Aboriginal people of the area, who believe the landmark was formed during the Dreamtime. The rock is famous for its dramatic color changes, appearing to glow fiery red at dawn and sunset due to the way the arkose sandstone reflects the light. In 2019, climbing the rock was permanently banned to respect the spiritual significance of the site to the traditional owners. Uluru is home to ancient springs, waterholes, rock caves, and ancient paintings that tell the ancestral stories of the land.
