Description
In late 1947, physicists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley at Bell Labs successfully demonstrated the first working transistor. Before the transistor, electronic devices relied on large, fragile, and hot vacuum tubes. The transistor—a small semiconductor device that can switch and amplify electronic signals—allowed for the miniaturization of electronics. This invention is the fundamental building block of all modern technology, including radios, televisions, and, most importantly, computers and smartphones. It enabled the transition from the industrial age to the digital age, earning the three scientists the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956.
