Lesotho is one of only three countries in the world that is entirely surrounded by another country (South Africa), the others being San Marino and Vatican City. It is famously known as the 'Kingdom in the Sky' because it is the only nation on Earth where every point of land is at least 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) above sea level. Its capital, Maseru, is located on the Caledon River and serves as the main entry point to the rugged Maloti Mountains. Due to its extreme altitude, Lesotho frequently experiences snow during the winter months, even while neighboring South African cities remain warm. The Basotho people are known for the traditional Basotho blanket and the conical 'Mokorotlo' hat, which is depicted on the national flag. The country’s economy is heavily tied to water; it exports massive amounts of water to South Africa through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, often referred to as 'white gold.'
