Description
Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands, with its capital, Suva, located on the largest island, Viti Levu. Fiji is unique because the 180th Meridian (the International Date Line) passes directly through the island of Taveuni. Historically, this meant one could stand with one foot in 'today' and one foot in 'yesterday.' However, for administrative convenience, the actual International Date Line is zig-zagged around the islands so the entire country shares the same time zone. Suva is a major regional hub for the South Pacific, housing the University of the South Pacific and serving as a center for Melanesian and Polynesian culture. The city is known for its British colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and high rainfall, as it sits on the windward side of the island. Fiji is also world-renowned for its 'tabua' (whale teeth), which are highly prized cultural artifacts used in traditional ceremonies, including weddings and funerals, symbolizing deep respect and community ties.
