Description
On October 29, 1969, the first message was sent over ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the precursor to the modern internet. The message was transmitted between a computer at UCLA and one at the Stanford Research Institute. The intended word was 'LOGIN,' but the system crashed after only the first two letters, 'LO,' were sent. ARPANET was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and was the first network to implement the TCP/IP protocol suite, which became the technical foundation of the Internet. Its primary purpose was to allow researchers to share computer resources and ensure communication could survive a nuclear strike. This event marked the beginning of packet-switching technology, which replaced circuit-switching and paved the way for the global, decentralized network we use today.
