Description
Kiribati is a remote island nation in the central Pacific Ocean consisting of 33 coral atolls and islands. It is the only country in the world that is situated in all four hemispheres: Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western. This is because its islands straddle both the Equator and the 180th Meridian (the anti-meridian). The capital, South Tarawa, is a thin strip of land where more than half of the nation's population lives, making it extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise. In 1995, Kiribati unilaterally moved the International Date Line far to the east so that the entire country could be on the same calendar day, which famously made Kiribati's Millennium Island (Caroline Atoll) the first place on Earth to see the sunrise of the year 2000. Most of the islands are low-lying atolls, rising no more than two meters above the sea. Due to the threat of climate change, the government has even purchased land in Fiji as a potential refuge for its citizens in the future.
