Description
Liberia is unique in African history as the first and oldest modern republic on the continent to have declared its independence without a revolt. It was established in the early 19th century by the American Colonization Society as a homeland for formerly enslaved African Americans. Its capital, Monrovia, is the only national capital in the world, other than Washington, D.C., named after a U.S. President—specifically James Monroe, who was a prominent supporter of the colony. The name 'Liberia' itself comes from the Latin word 'liber,' meaning free. Because of its origins, Liberia's flag, constitution, and government structure are closely modeled after those of the United States. Despite facing a devastating civil war in the late 20th century, Liberia made history again in 2006 by electing Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first democratically elected female head of state in Africa. The country is also home to a significant portion of the Upper Guinean Rainforest, a global biodiversity hotspot.
