Description
The opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) marked the birth of modern intercity rail travel. It was the first railway to rely exclusively on steam power and the first to use a double track. George Stephenson’s 'Rocket' won the Rainhill Trials to become the locomotive of choice. The railway proved that steam-powered transport was not only feasible but highly profitable for both goods and passengers. It slashed the travel time between the industrial hub of Manchester and the port of Liverpool, effectively creating the world's first industrial corridor. However, the opening was also marked by tragedy; William Huskisson, a Member of Parliament, was struck and killed by the Rocket, becoming the first widely reported railway fatality. Despite this, the success of the L&MR triggered 'Railway Mania' across Britain and the world.
