Description
In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton published what is widely considered the most influential book in the history of science. In 'Principia,' Newton formulated the three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. He used mathematical descriptions to explain how the same forces that cause an apple to fall to the ground also govern the orbits of planets and the tides of the ocean. This work provided the physical and mathematical foundation for the Scientific Revolution. By proving that the universe operated according to predictable, universal laws, Newton's work moved humanity away from a mystical view of nature toward a mechanical and rational one. It remained the dominant scientific viewpoint for over two centuries until the arrival of Einstein's relativity.
