Saint Kitts and Nevis holds the record for being the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, both in terms of land area and population. Located in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, this federal two-island nation covers only about 261 square kilometers. The capital, Basseterre, is located on the larger island of Saint Kitts. Despite its tiny size, the nation has a rich and complex history; it was the first Caribbean island to be colonized by both the British and the French, earning it the nickname 'The Mother Colony of the West Indies.' The economy, once entirely dependent on sugar production, has successfully pivoted toward luxury tourism and a pioneering 'Citizenship by Investment' program. The islands are dominated by dormant volcanoes, most notably Mount Liamuiga, and are famous for the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the 'Gibraltar of the West Indies' due to its strategic military importance during the colonial era.
