Description
The Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world. When it opened for the 1950 FIFA World Cup, it was the largest stadium in the world by capacity. In the final match between Brazil and Uruguay, an official record of 173,850 spectators attended, though estimates suggest the actual crowd was over 200,000—most of whom were standing. Following various renovations for safety and modernization, its capacity was reduced to approximately 78,000. It remains a 'temple' of football and has hosted two World Cup finals and the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics. A unique feature of the stadium is the 'Hall of Fame,' where the footprints of legends like Pelé and Garrincha are preserved in bronze.
