Description
Paro Taktsang, also known as the 'Tiger's Nest,' is a prominent Himalayan Buddhist sacred site and temple complex located on a cliffside of the upper Paro valley. It was built in 1692 around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, and three days. Legend says he flew to this location from Tibet on the back of a tigress. The monastery clings to a sheer cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. It consists of four main temples and residential shelters, all interconnected by stone stairways and narrow bridges. To protect the sanctity of the site, visitors must leave all cameras and phones at the entrance, ensuring the internal golden statues and vibrant thangka paintings remain unphotographed.
