Description
The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse located on a peninsula about 2.4 kilometers from the center of A Coruña, Galicia. Built in the late 1st century AD, it is the only fully preserved Roman lighthouse that is still used for maritime signaling today. It was modeled after the Pharos of Alexandria. The structure stands 55 meters tall, and while the exterior was renovated in the 18th century in a Neoclassical style, the core of the building remains original Roman masonry. An inscription at the base reveals the architect's name: Gaius Sevius Lupus. Legend says that Hercules killed the giant Geryon here and buried his head under the foundations, which is why the tower appears on the city's coat of arms. It stands as a testament to the sophistication of Roman navigation and structural longevity.
