Description
The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona is a monumental Roman Catholic church designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction began in 1882 and famously continues to this day, funded entirely by private donations and ticket sales. Gaudí’s design blends Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms with a profound focus on nature; the interior columns are designed to resemble giant trees with branching canopies. The church is planned to have 18 towers in total, representing the Twelve Apostles, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and the tallest—reaching 172.5 meters—representing Jesus Christ. Gaudí once famously remarked that his 'client' (God) was in no hurry to see the building finished. Upon completion, it will become the tallest church building in the world.
