Description
The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman and independence activist Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was instrumental in the political integration of India. Located in the state of Gujarat, it stands at a height of 182 meters (597 feet), making it the tallest statue in the world—nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. The height was specifically chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The statue is designed to withstand winds of up to 180 km/h and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale. To build it, the government launched an 'Iron Campaign' across India, asking farmers to donate their used farming tools to provide the iron needed for the internal structure. It features a viewing gallery at 153 meters, located in the chest of the statue, which can hold up to 200 people at a time.
