One of the most complex geological nesting dolls is found on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Taal Lake contains Taal Volcano, which is a 'complex volcano.' Inside the main crater of Taal Volcano is another lake called the Main Crater Lake. Until a major eruption in 2020 altered the landscape, there was a small island inside that lake called Vulcan Point. This meant that Vulcan Point was an island in a lake, on an island (Taal Volcano), in a lake (Taal Lake), on an island (Luzon), in an ocean (Pacific). While the 2020 eruption drained much of the inner lake, it remains a world-renowned example of the 'recursive' geography created by volcanic activity in archipelagos.
