Description
Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. It is a transcontinental country, spanning across Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. The boundary between the two continents is generally defined by the Ural Mountains and the Ural River. Interestingly, while about 75% of Russia's landmass is located in Asia (Siberia), approximately 77% of its population lives on the European side. Moscow, the capital and largest city, is located in the European part and serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the nation. Russia shares borders with 14 sovereign nations and has 11 different time zones, the most of any country. Its vast geography ranges from the tundra of the north to the steppes of the south, and it contains the world's deepest lake, Lake Baikal, located in the Asian portion of the country.
