Borneo
Description
Islands are typically under the sovereignty of one or two nations (like Hispaniola or Ireland). However, Borneo is a major geographical exception. It is the only island in the world that is shared by three separate sovereign countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Indonesia owns the largest portion (Kalimantan), Malaysia owns the northern states of Sabah and Sarawak, and the small but wealthy Sultanate of Brunei is entirely located on the island's northern coast (except for its maritime territory). Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and is home to one of the oldest rainforests on Earth. This tri-national division makes it a complex area for conservation and political diplomacy.
