Description
Lake Titicaca is located high in the Andes Mountains on the border between Peru and Bolivia. It sits at an elevation of 3,812 meters above sea level, earning it the title of the world's highest navigable lake for large vessels. Its capital of Peru is Lima, and Bolivia has two: La Paz and Sucre. By volume of water and surface area, it is also the largest lake in South America. The lake is famous for its 'Uros' people, who live on artificial floating islands made of bundled totora reeds. In Incan mythology, Titicaca is considered the birthplace of the sun and the first Inca kings. It is a deep lake, with a maximum depth of 281 meters, and remains cold year-round.
