Description
Reykjavik, Iceland, holds the title of the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state. Located at roughly 64° North, it is just south of the Arctic Circle. Many people mistakenly guess Oslo, Stockholm, or Helsinki, but Reykjavik is further north than all of them. Interestingly, while it is the northernmost capital, it is not the northernmost city in the world—that title usually goes to Longyearbyen in Svalbard, though it is not a capital of a sovereign nation. Reykjavik’s location means that in mid-winter, the city receives only about four hours of daylight, while in mid-summer, the sun never fully sets, a phenomenon known as the Midnight Sun.
