Description
Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, is the northernmost capital city of a sovereign state in the world. Located on the southwestern shore of Iceland, its name translates to 'Smoky Bay,' inspired by the steam rising from the region's hot springs. The city is famous for its colorful houses, creative culture, and its commitment to sustainability; almost all of its heating and electricity are provided by geothermal and hydroelectric power. During the summer, the city experiences the 'midnight sun' with nearly 24 hours of daylight, while in winter, it only receives about four hours of sunlight. Reykjavík serves as the gateway to Iceland's dramatic volcanic and glacial landscapes. It is home to the Althing, which is believed to be the oldest surviving parliament in the world, founded in 930 AD. Despite its northern latitude, the city has a relatively mild climate for its position due to the North Atlantic Current, which warms the surrounding waters.
