Description
The Nile is not just the longest river in the world; it is also a geographical cross-continental bridge. It is the only river system in the world that flows through the Tropic of Capricorn (indirectly via its headwaters in the Victoria basin area near the Equator), the Equator itself, and the Tropic of Cancer. Because it flows from the southern highlands (the White Nile) and the Ethiopian highlands (the Blue Nile) all the way to the Mediterranean in the north, it spans more than 35 degrees of latitude. This incredible span is what allows it to cross multiple climatic zones, from tropical rainforests to the world's most extreme desert, the Sahara, without drying up.
