Description
Actually, this is a trick: No U.S. state has two different birds as its 'primary' state bird. However, several states share the *same* state bird. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven different states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. This is the highest number for any bird. On the other hand, several states have a 'state bird' and a 'state game bird' or 'state waterfowl.' For example, Massachusetts has the Black-capped Chickadee as its state bird and the Wild Turkey as its state game bird. These distinctions allow states to honor multiple species of local wildlife while maintaining a single primary symbol.
