Description
Mount Everest, known in Nepali as Sagarmatha and in Tibetan as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The international border between Nepal and China runs across its summit point. Its elevation was most recently established at 8,848.86 meters in 2020. The mountain was formed by the tectonic collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, a process that continues today, causing the mountain to grow by approximately 4 millimeters per year. For climbers, the 'Death Zone' refers to altitudes above 8,000 meters where oxygen levels are insufficient to sustain human life for long periods. Despite the extreme conditions, Everest remains a pinnacle of human exploration and a vital source of tourism for the region, though it faces modern challenges like overcrowding and environmental degradation.
