Greenland (Denmark)
Description
Greenland is the largest island in the world that is not considered a continent. It covers about 836,000 square miles (2.16 million km²). While Australia is technically larger, it is classified as its own continent. Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. About 80% of its surface is covered by an ice sheet, which is up to 2 miles (3 km) thick in some places. If all of Greenland's ice were to melt, global sea levels would rise by about 24 feet (7 meters). Despite its massive size, Greenland has a population of only about 56,000 people, making it the least densely populated territory in the world.
