Description
Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered that certain sequences of DNA vary significantly between individuals and can be used as a 'genetic fingerprint.' He realized that these patterns could be used to identify people with near-certainty. This invention revolutionized forensic science, providing a way to solve 'cold cases' decades after a crime was committed and, equally importantly, to exonerate the wrongly convicted. Its first use in 1986 helped catch a murderer and cleared an innocent suspect in Leicestershire, England. DNA profiling is now also essential for paternity testing, tracking hereditary diseases, and studying human evolution and migration patterns. It has fundamentally altered the legal system and our understanding of biological identity.
