Description
Shen Kuo was a Song Dynasty polymath whose scientific achievements were centuries ahead of his time. In his work 'Dream Pool Essays,' he provided the first description of the magnetic needle compass, which became essential for navigation. He also formulated a theory of land formation (geomorphology) by observing fossils in the Taihang Mountains, concluding that the land had been reshaped over vast periods by erosion and silt deposition—a concept not recognized in the West until the 18th century. Shen Kuo also improved the designs of the armillary sphere, gnomon, and clepsydra clock. He was the first to distinguish between magnetic north and true north, a discovery vital for accurate mapping. As a high-ranking government official, he also managed hydraulics, military strategy, and finance. His diverse contributions make him one of the most significant figures in the history of science and technology in pre-modern Asia.
