Description
The concept of the barcode was developed by Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver, who were inspired by Morse code to create a system for automatically reading product information. The first design used concentric circles (bullseye), but it wasn't until George Laurer developed the Universal Product Code (UPC) for IBM that the invention became practical. The first item ever scanned in a grocery store was a pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum on June 26, 1974. Barcodes revolutionized the retail and logistics industries by allowing for instant inventory tracking, reducing human error, and drastically speeding up the checkout process. This invention is a key driver of modern supply chain efficiency and paved the way for more advanced tracking technologies like QR codes and RFID tags.
