Description
Buster Keaton, known as 'The Great Stone Face,' was a legend of physical comedy and a pioneer of special effects. In his short film 'The Play House,' Keaton used a custom-built camera shutter to film himself playing every single member of a nine-person minstrel show simultaneously. He plays the clarinet, the drums, and most notably, the banjo. Because there were no computers, he had to rewind the film nine times and mask the lens with perfect precision while remaining in character. The banjo, a staple of vaudeville where Keaton started his career, serves as the centerpiece of this technical marvel. This sequence is considered one of the most complex camera tricks of the silent era. It demonstrated that movie legends were not just actors, but technical innovators who used instruments to bridge the gap between stage tradition and film's future.
