Description
Charlie Chaplin is remembered as one of the greatest legends of the silent film era, primarily for his 'Little Tramp' character. However, many do not know that he was also an accomplished self-taught musician and composer. Chaplin played the violin and cello left-handed, and he practiced for hours every day. Because he could not read sheet music, he would hum melodies to assistants who would transcribe them into scores. He eventually composed the music for almost all of his films, including the iconic song 'Smile' from 'Modern Times.' His ability to blend physical comedy with deeply moving musical scores redefined the cinematic experience. His violin was his constant companion on set, used to find the rhythmic 'tempo' of a scene before the cameras rolled. This musicality is why his silent films have a rhythmic, dance-like quality that remains timeless.
