Description
Hedy Lamarr was not only a glamorous movie legend during Hollywood's Golden Age but also a brilliant inventor. During WWII, she co-invented a 'Secret Communications System' to help Allied torpedoes avoid detection. This system was inspired by the player piano. Lamarr and her co-inventor, George Antheil, used a mechanism similar to the perforated paper rolls used in player pianos to allow the radio signal to 'hop' between 88 different frequencies (the same number as keys on a piano). This 'frequency hopping' made the signal impossible to jam. While the Navy didn't use it until the 1960s, her invention laid the groundwork for modern Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Lamarr is a rare legend whose legacy lives on not just in films, but in the very technology used to stream them today, all thanks to her understanding of a musical instrument.
