Description
In 1964, Sidney Poitier made history as the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 'Lilies of the Field.' He played Homer Smith, an itinerant handyman who helps a group of East German nuns build a chapel in the Arizona desert. His win was a seismic shift in Hollywood, coming 24 years after Hattie McDaniel’s Supporting win. Poitier was already a major star, but this award validated him as a leading man in an era of deep racial tension in the United States. When he accepted the award from Anne Bancroft, her kiss on his cheek caused a minor scandal among conservative viewers. Poitier remained the only Black Best Actor winner for 38 years, until Denzel Washington won for 'Training Day' in 2002. His legacy is one of dignity and trailblazing excellence, opening doors for every Black leading actor who followed.
